About Ultrium LTO Technology Ultrium LTO (Linear Tape Open) technology was developed jointly by HP, IBM and Certance (Seagate) now Quantum to provide a clear and viable choice in an increasingly complex array of tape storage options. Ultrium LTO technology is an "open format" technology, which means that users will have multiple sources of product and media. The "open" nature of LTO technology also provides a means of enabling compatibility between different vendors' offerings.
Tape drives today have evolved to become the most widely used devices for backup and restore. The multiple types of tape devices and media, can sometimes lead to the wrong product being purchased or specified. Backup is where information is replicated from the server(s) to the backup media, normally tape. This information is held for a specified period before it is overwritten (typically 30 days). Should a server fail, this information can be restored to the same state as the last backup. Increasingly today due to the huge capacity and tape drive performance automated tape libraries are being used for Data Archiving. These solutions free up valuable disk space on expensive disk arrays but still allow users access to archived data. Please click on the vendors logo below for information.
